True Identity
Genesis 32:27 (NKJV)
So He said to him, “What is your name?”
He said, “Jacob.”
Your identity is very important. If you don’t know who you are or whose you are, you will never discover your purpose in life. Jacob’s story is a classic one that speaks to us about finding true identity. It took Jacob many years, some pain, and finally an encounter with God to finally understand who he really was. For some time, he lived life as though he was someone else.
This happens to us too. When we haven’t found out who we really are in Christ, we walk, talk and live life as though we were someone else. The Bible says in John 1:12, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” You are a child of God. You have to learn how to walk, talk and live life as a child of God.
Too often, the devil will try to tell us that we are not worthy to be called His children or that you’re not good enough. He might even tell you that you’ve done so many mistakes that God will never accept you. You have to discern the lies and never accept them. God calls you His because He loves you and because you choose to receive and believe in Him. This has nothing to do with what you’ve done.
Another misconception we have is that if we pray more, read the Bible more, or go to Church more, God will love us more. You need to understand that whether you do any of these things, He will love you regardless. The Bible says that He loved us even while we were sinners, He still died for us on the Cross. He didn’t wait until we were good to die for us, He died when we were dead in our sins. This shows us that God’s love for us goes way beyond our actions.
When you find out who you are, your true purpose is identified and you can live life differently. When Jacob answered the question: What is your name? He finally responded truthfully. When Isaac asked for his name when He was going to receive the blessing, Jacob said he was Esau. This time, he didn’t make the same mistake. He revealed who he really was. When he did this, God was able to deal with his identity. He changed his name and his walk with Him changed forever. God does the same with us. When we come openly to Him, He changes our identity to have His identity. But it’s not until we admit it, that God can do something about it.
Are you ready to have your true identity revealed, then you need to surrender yourself to God completely. Stop living a lie and accept who you were meant to be. Don’t allow the lies to stop what God has in store for you. God can make something great out of you, but you have to be willing to lay everything down.
