“If I walk into a church I would probably catch on fire”

I have probably heard this phrase uttered more than I would have liked to. People have a perception of God as this Giant Bearded man who sits above clouds and strikes us with lightning. We need to change that in our mind, although He is a God who is all powerful, His intent is not to hurt you but to guide you and show you love.

In John 8:10-11

Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”

11 “No, Lord,” she said.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

Jesus is speaking to the woman who committed adultery, most of us probably heard the story where the pharisees bring her to Jesus and He  says “but let those who have never sinned throw the first stone” but I am looking at this through a different lens. In verse 10 and 11 Jesus says I do not condemn you and to not sin anymore. This to me was huge when I read it. I was confused, I said to myself “so that’s it? He just tells her to go on and sin no more?” I expected some sort of punishment. Like most people we expect some sort of punishment because that’s how we were raised. But when we see Jesus said “go on and sin no more” He is guiding her to do the right thing. When we screw up God doesn’t want to punish us, He wants to guide us in the right direction. Don’t ever confuse God with someone who wants to hurt or punish you, He wants to show you His love.
