Psalms 91:1-16

I love this whole chapter but the one part in this whole chapter that really caught my attention is the beginning of verse 5 that says “Fear nothing…”. Fear Nothing, what should I fear? Nothing! That’s just gets me. So why is it that we tend to be scared of every little thing, God has told us to be scared of nothing. Not disease, nor disaster, nor creatures in the night, absolutely nothing. So what scares you when God has told you to not be scared, is it loneliness, the future, debt, death, etc. or is the reality of all that fear, that you have yet to meet your Creator? Here is the answer: seek and find your Maker, your Father who is waiting for you with outstretched arms; leave all that fear behind and receive your Savior and only then will you be able to accept the Words He says to his children, Fear Nothing! Become His and become fearless.

We’ve all heard it, we’ve been taught since we were young the golden rule “Do to others as you would like them to do to you”. Now as humans we tend to not follow this as much as we should, and let me tell you incase you didn’t know this principal is also biblical; let me show you.

Obadiah 1:15
“… As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.” (NIV)

Now here is my favorite version of this verse
“… As you have done, it will be done to you. What you did will boomerang back and hit your own head.” (MSG)

Wow! I love the version The Message bible has, it says it plain and clear “what you did will boomerang back and hit your own head”. So there it is, the golden rule we’ve been taught ever since we can remember. Now why is it we tend to forget about it and not make such a big deal about it, when obviously it is. Enough for God to think it needed to be written down for us to remember, but it’s the one thing I believe we forget the most and why is that? Well simple we are humans and we tend to go off what we think is best instead of what God knows is best.
Our nature is that when someone does something to us, something bad. We think “oh, just wait till I get them back” or “They’ll regret ever doing that to me” and all we think about is revenge; a way to get them back and even more worse than what they did to us. Our mentality is that when we get our revenge that person will learn to never mess with us; but we are wrong, oh so wrong. The word of God says it loud and clear “what you did will boomerang back and hit you on your own head”. The only thing we do when we seek to look for revenge when someone does us wrong is we build that revolving door and it starts to spin. Little do we know that even though we seek revenge we are also setting ourselves up, by causing what ever we did to return back to us sooner or later.
It might not even be by the same person who upset you the first time around, it might be someone new. And we return to do revenge on that new person; but wait why not stop and think “Do I really want this to keep coming back to me or do I want something else”. Nobody wants bad things to happen to them, so why not change that cycle. When someone does bad to you, don’t do the same by returning bad with bad; but change and return a bad with a good. So that when that boomerang comes back to you, it comes back with good and not bad. I don’t know about you but I want to be hit by a boomerang full of goodness and blessing, what about you? Set yourself up for something great.

Judges 8:22-27 (27)

“Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. All the Isrealites prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family.”

After the Midianite war, Gideon requested something from the Isrealites and that was that each one give him an earring(It was a custom for the Ishmaelites to wear Gold earrings.) from what they had taken away from their enemies. And so it was that they all gave one earring and it turned out to be a good amount and Gideon took all the gold and formmed it into an ephod. An ephod was a piece of clothing connected with worshiping God, and in making it, I believe it was Gideon’s purpose to be a symbol to remind the Isrealites of what God had done for them and remind them that all the honor and glory went to Him. Unfortunately, though Gideon had another idea in mind when making it, the Isrealites began to worship it soon after he made it.

I am amazed of the fact how these people forgot so quickly what God had delivered them from and went on to worship a piece of clothing, really a piece of clothing. I am like, wow that is so dumb; but then when I start thinking of the many times we as people forget the things God does for us. It amazes me that there our times in our lives when we do what the Isrealites did, prostitute themselves. Yes I said it!, we at times prostitute ourselves to other things that are worthless, that are not significant. I found that the word prostitue means to devote to corrupt or unworthy purposes. To know what that means and to continue on living that way just absolutely means you have no worth for yourself, why would you waste your time devoting yourself to corrupt or unworthy purposes. It’s a shame to know that livivng that way means we think so little of oursleves that we feel we don’t deserve anything better.

Why is it so easy for us to remeber what God does for us, or has done for us at the moment and once time passes by we tend to forget and go other ways. Just like the Isrealites who decided to worship a piece of clothing; so quickly they forgot their miraculous deliverance from the Midianites. So quickly they turn from God to go their own way, something many of us tend to do so often but why? Why waste time on things that do not deserve our time, on things that in the end give us no sense of accomplishment. This story is repeated time and time again throughout the book of Judges and throughout the history of the Church aswell. You know, God forgives us and delivers us and we’re thankful and close to Him for a time; but then we soon forget and go our own way. A cycle that God has been trying to and will continue to work to break it. So next time remember what He does for you and don’t and I mean DON’T FORGET!.
